Gas fitting is a separate licence from plumbing, and plenty of plumbers do not hold it. We do — Gas Fitting GF 3318 — which is why gas work here is a service in its own right rather than a line at the bottom of another page.

If you can smell gas, stop reading. Do not touch a light switch or anything else electrical, open the doors and windows, get everyone outside, turn the supply off at the meter or bottle if you can reach it safely, and ring us from outside.

Right now

Immediate for a gas smell. Booked for installs and servicing

How you know

The signs, in the words people actually use

If two or more of these sound familiar, you have almost certainly got this one.

  • A smell of gas anywhere inside or around the meter
  • A cooktop burner running yellow or orange instead of blue
  • Soot marks on or above an appliance
  • A heater that keeps shutting itself down
  • Headaches or nausea that lift when you leave the house
What it usually is

What it turns out to be, most common first

Written in frequencies rather than percentages, because a made-up percentage is worse than an honest 'most of the time'.

  1. 1

A perished flexible connector or seal

The most common leak point, and often behind a cooktop or a heater that has been moved for cleaning.

  2. 2

    Incomplete combustion in an appliance

The yellow flame and the soot. It means the appliance is producing carbon monoxide, and it is the fault we treat most seriously.

  3. 3

An undersized or overloaded gas line

Very common after a continuous flow hot water unit gets added to a line that was sized for a cooktop and a heater twenty years ago.

  4. 4

    Unlicensed work

We find it regularly. Gas work done without a licence is uninsured, uncertified, and the reason some house insurance claims get declined.

How we fix it

What actually happens, stage by stage

No mystery, and nothing that happens out of sight. If there is a camera going down a drain, the screen gets turned around.

  1. Stage 01

    Make it safe first

On any gas call the supply is isolated and the area ventilated before anything else happens. Nothing gets diagnosed while a leak is running.

  2. Stage 02

    Test the whole installation

A pressure drop test across the installation, then an electronic detector across the fittings and appliances. A leak is not found by smell — it is found by test, and the test tells us whether there is more than one.

  3. Stage 03

    Repair or replace to standard

Connectors, seals, regulators or pipework replaced to AS/NZS 5601. If an appliance is producing carbon monoxide it does not go back into service until it passes, and we will say that plainly even when it is not what anyone wants to hear.

  4. Stage 04

    Certify it

Every gas job leaves with a compliance certificate and a copy for your records. It is what your insurer and any future buyer will ask for, and it is not optional.

What it costs

Published, with the reasoning attached

Gas work is quoted as a job, with the certificate included. There is no separate paperwork fee — certifying our own work is part of doing it.

  • Gas leak detection and make safe

    From $240

Attendance, isolation, full pressure test and electronic detection. The repair is quoted once we know where it is.

  • Cooktop or oven install and certify

    $320 – $560

Connection, test and certificate, assuming the point is already there and in the right place.

  • New gas point run

    $480 – $1,100

The range is entirely about distance and access — a metre through a wall against twelve metres under a floor.

  • Gas heater service and safety check

    $220

Combustion test, carbon monoxide check, clean and certificate. Worth doing before winter rather than during it.

If we find unlicensed gas work we will tell you what is wrong with it and quote putting it right. We will not certify somebody else's uncertified work — no gas fitter can.

How long

How long it takes

A leak call is attended immediately and made safe within the visit. Appliance installs are one to three hours. A new gas point is half a day to a day depending on the run. Certificates are lodged the same day, not the following week.

Stopping it happening again

Keeping a gas installation safe

Gas is very safe when it is maintained and quietly dangerous when it is not. Three things.

  • Look at your cooktop flame. It should be blue and steady. Yellow, orange or lifting off the burner means it needs attention now, not at the next service.
  • Have gas heaters serviced every two years, and before winter rather than in the middle of it. The carbon monoxide test is the point of the service.
  • Fit a carbon monoxide alarm if you have any unflued gas appliance. They cost about $60 and they detect the thing you cannot smell.

Questions

What people ask about gas fitting

  • Can a plumber do gas work?

Only if they also hold a gas fitting licence — they are separate authorisations in Western Australia. Ours is GF 3318 and it is on every certificate we issue. It is a fair question to ask anyone who quotes you gas work.

  • What is a compliance certificate and do I need one?

It is the document saying the gas work was done by a licensed fitter to the standard, and it gets lodged with the regulator. You need it for insurance and you will need it when you sell. Any gas work done without one is a problem waiting for a bad moment.

  • I can smell gas but only sometimes. Is that urgent?

Yes. An intermittent smell usually means a small leak that is being cleared by ventilation most of the time. Ring us — testing it costs a couple of hundred dollars and not testing it is not worth thinking about.
